Background
Upon graduation from Penn State University in 2012, Lyons began his career at Big 4 Consulting Firm, EY, in the Washington DC metro area. One year into his career, Lyons’ life was immediately turned upside down. On May 24, 2014, Lyons mistakenly dove into shallow water, breaking his T5/T6 vertebrae and became paralyzed instantly.
Lyons looked at his injury as a second chance at life and an opportunity to discover his purpose. Lyons was introduced to handcycling in 2014 just months after his injury, and in 2017, Lyons moved to the US Olympic & Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO as the first full time resident handcyclist in Team USA history. Ironically enough, Lyons’ first day on the team was May 24, 2017, exactly 3 years to the date of his injury.
In just 5 short years since joining the team, Lyons has excelled on the national and international stage. Today, Lyons is a 2024 Paralympian who recently returned from Paris and is now training for the 2028 Paralympics.
